My thoughts on the trial run through the Delta.

Twas a good workout for both me and the bike. Vietnam is definitely cheaper than Cambodia, hotel rooms were on average 10 dollars a night and for that one would get air-con, hot water, TV Fridge and most important for me a decent hard mattress. Food was mostly OK – good, breakfast 1$, Lunch 2$ and 5 or 6 $ for dinner with plenty of street snacks in the afternoon. The Vietnamese are also getting friendlier and less shouty at you, however no comparison to the Khmers who must be the friendliest people in the world. Beer great value, cans of 333 bababa less than a dollar, Saigon Red bottles same price.

Anyways here’s the route Saigon to Phnom Penh with some info for fellow cyclists

    • HCMC to My Tho 80k,  OK 6 lane highway that soon becomes a two lane piece of crap.
  • My Tho to Vinh Long or is it Long Vinh? 75k great ride out of My Tho and straight into Delta country. However, the last half was motorway madness with trucks n buses flying past inches away with horns blasting into my earoles. Plus a mother of a Mekong bridge to climb at the end.
  • Vinh Long to Can Tho 45K nice and easy .
  • Can Tho to Rach Gia 110K nice n easy till the end.
  • Rach Gia to Ha Tien 95K , not so easy as it was back to back with the previous ride but great scenery
  • Ha Tien To Kampot ( Cambodia) 60K I went the long way as I missed the turning.
  • Kampot to Phnom Penh 150k , too long and too hot ,would have been better to spend a night in Ang Ta Som ot Takeo town both about 75K away from Kampot.

  • Best route Can Tho to Rach Gia – First half all paddy fields no traffic, second half all canals and a little traffic
  • Best hotel the one in Can Tho , Tay Ho on the riverfront
  • Best town My Tho, great riverfront area
  • Best food Can Tho, a whole street full of stalls and little coffee shops, plus proper restaurants with English menus and English speaking staff
  • Best beer, 333 in cans

    1. Not really, I followed the road just north of the river which was very pleasant until i hit Song (river) Ba Rai and crossed on a ferry and headed north then turned left which was when the motorway madness started. Another time I’d try to do it from Ben Tre island.
